"Pulled" Hamstrings, An Alternate Perspective

Here's a quick video discussing the nature of a "pulled" hamstring. These types of injuries happen frequently in runners and present with very specific sites of pain. However, it's important to understand exactly where the dysfunction is happening, that ultimately lead to the pain. Pain is an indicator that something is wrong, but it's up to the clinician to uncover the true nature of where the dysfunction lies.

Hip Pain and Running

"I can't believe that I'm finally able to run without pain....thank you."

Spring is in the air, and with that, many seasonal runners are crawling out of hibernation, strapping on their running shoes, and logging those base miles in preparation for the summer race season. After a long period of time without running, the transition back to race form is often met with injury as the body attempts acclimate itself with the demands of a newly introduced training program. One of the most common complaints I see amongst my running patients is lateral hip pain.

"No Pain, No Gain!!!"

Health Tip: "No pain, no gain" is a myth that has plagued the fitness community and rehabilitation world for years. There is a difference between muscle soreness and sharp or stabbing pain. If it hurts (pain not soreness), you're damaging something. End of story.

Always have your pain and function assessed by a professional and train smart...or get injured and don't train at all.

Improving Your Diet

Health tip: Lifestyle changes are hard! If you're looking to improve your diet by eliminating unhealthy food choices, start by removing one food item at a time. Trying to discard multiple foods simultaneously can be extremely challenging and may lead to a failed attempt at your new lifestyle. However, once you've successfully removed one food and all your cravings for it, you've proven to yourself that it CAN be done!

TMJ Pain

I recently treated two patients with similar findings. One patient was a notorious teeth grinder while sleeping. The other had no jaw history/symptoms at all. However, both patients had a complete lack of function when testing the rectus abdominis (six pack) and transverse abdominis muscles: two major players when it comes to core stability.

Hip Pain

Over the last several weeks I've seen a few similar cases of hip pain. The specific causes can vary widely, but the general cause of these cases has been consistent across the board: poorly functioning muscles responsible for moving the hip into a flexed position.

The Neck and Back Pain Connection

"If one muscle is functioning poorly, the brain will find something else to do its job."
